Academic scholarships from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) and the Ohio Turfgrass Foundation boosted his understanding of maintenance efficiency. After Craig combined two academic degrees in Landscape Architecture and Turfgrass Science, he began working with Wadsworth Golf Construction gaining insight into the logistics and challenges of building courses. That experience led to owning a golf course construction company for several years until his majority interest was bought out. "Shaping various golf features allows the architect to feel every contour of the terrain, which is the playing foundation of a hole."

Before starting SGI in 1990, Craig worked as the Design Coordinator for the Hurdzan Design Group and for past PGA Player, Don Sechrest. Craig has been a Registered Landscape Architect since 1983 and a Member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects since 1989.

Opening SGI in January of 1990 has provided opportunities to collaborate with Larry Mize, PGA and golf Hall of Fame Member, Nick Price. His work has prepared several venues for major events including, The 1995 Ryder Cup Matches, the NEC World Tour Championship, The 2004 US Amateur and The 1996 Curtis Cup Matches.

Today, SGI has lead the way in GPS driven grading & shaping based on the accuracy of their grading plans. "The technology today represents the opportunity to streamline the grading process to save time, money and increase the accuracy of the design concepts." The Grande Dunes Members Club, located in Myrtle Beach, was the first project to use this advanced technology. The design collaboration with Nick Price opened in May 2005.
